Chapter Eleven

Agirl’s night out was just what she needed, Olivia thought, as she swayed her body to the music. Sure, she missed Nathan, but they had spent all week together and it was good to get out. Be with her friends, have a life separate from him. Expect thoughts of Nathan kept intruding into her mind and while she kept pushing them aside, they stubbornly returned again and again.

It had taken a bit of convincing to get Mary to agree to the night’s plans, or lack thereof, really. After Mary had suggested getting together, Olivia had started a text chain that also included Courtney and Astrid. As suggestions on what to do rolled in, it was clear they were never going to all agree on the same thing. So, Olivia did the next best thing and combined them all into one.

The first stop was a wine and painting event at a small art gallery. This was Mary’s suggestion and while Olivia thought it would be dull, she was surprised at how much fun she had. They were given wine and painting instructions, with the result that all four women had slightly different variations of a moonscape. Olivia couldn’t help but think of Nathan’s moon tattoo the entire time she was painting.

His broad shoulders were a constant source of remembrance. The way his skin was soft on his back but underneath was a wall of muscle. The way he held his breath as she traced his tattoo, mesmerized by his subtle inhale. How he would let her spread her hands over his back, trace his muscles, let her linger, until suddenly he couldn’t take it anymore and she would be flipped over on her back, his erection pressing firmly into her.

Yes, time apart was a good thing, Olivia repeated to herself. Not that she quite believed it.

After the painting, they had hit up a Japanese restaurant, Courtney’s suggestion. Trays of sushi were brought out and Olivia tried everything, washed down by an impressive amount of sake. They had a small room to themselves and for a brief time, Olivia did forget about Nathan and instead enjoyed a sisterhood of friendship.

The tamer parts of the evening over, it was on to Astrid’s pick. The piano bar she selected allowed them to digest their dinner while still keeping them fresh with drinks. It was a swanky affair with brass chandeliers and damask wallpaper. The dim lighting almost propelled their group to think about turning in early but the piano player kept the atmosphere light and jolly.

Olivia and Astrid eventually made it onto the dancefloor as strains of nineties funk vibrated through the room. Astrid wore a sleek black dress that plunged dangerously low, her cleavage on full display. For a brief moment, Olivia felt self-conscious next to her but then realized she would never be able to pull off such a dress on her petite frame.

The sequins on Olivia’s dress danced in the light; the rainbow of colors was meant to be fun and flirty.
